This month I decided to take a challenge. The Fab Furniture Flipping Contest challenge to give a piece of furniture a brand spanking new look. This month, the theme is – “TAKE A SEAT” and the hosts are the lovely Stacy from Anastasia Vintage and Colleen from 58 Water Street.
What I was planning on making over? This antique chair that I love (pic below). It has beautiful details but the cushion is kinda blah. I knew with a lick of paint and a new place to park my behind that it would be stunning.
As soon as Minted was announced as the sponsor, I knew I had to participate. I might just be a little obsessed with everything they sell.
Minted essentially has a marketplace of independent artists and they sell their work in the form of fabric, stationary, artwork and other home decor items. The selection of design is astounding. I’m not exaggerating when I say it took me a solid 5 days before I was able to decide which fabrics I wanted to order.
In the end, I decided on these two. I simply couldn’t just pick one, so I decided I would tackle my first ever sewing project along with the reupholstering.
I love the juxtaposition of the dots against the bold brush strokes. Don’t you think the colors complement each other perfectly?
If you have a chair like this lying around, this project is so simple and is extremely transformative.
To start, all you have to do is remove the cushion from the chair. Mine was screwed down so I just unscrewed it and popped it off.
Use the seat cushion as a template for your fabric, leaving several inches around the sides so that you have enough material to staple down.
Using a staple gun, secure all the sides, pulling tight each time. Leave the corners, as if you were wrapping a present.
Finally, staple down the corners, again making sure to pull taut before securing.
Don’t worry about keeping this neat. You can cut excess material if you need to. Plus, this will be hidden anyway.
I then painted the chair using my go-to brand of Paint, Velvet Finishes in the color Timeless.
Finally, using this tutorial, I sewed my first ever pillow. I love how it turned out and it was so easy to do! Definitely the perfect beginner sewing project.
Ready for the reveal? Here we go!
It totally jazzes up my desk area and I love how it turned out. What do you think? Will you be heading right over to Minted to scope out their fabulous fabric selection?
I’ve already used the remainder of my fabric as a new tablecloth and new throw pillows for my couch. Loving it!
If you would like to participate in future Fab Flipping Furniture Contests please contact the hosts at firstname.lastname@example.org to find out how!
