It’s no surprise that so many people want to enlisted professionals to help them get their clutter under control. In fact, the majority of Americans are not as organized as they would like to be. The number one area in the home that people are usually most unhappy with is the garage. For many of us, hiring a professional organizer isn’t in our budget. For those of you who are planning on taking on organizing the garage yourselves, here’s some tips from the professionals that you can use.

1. Sort: This is the step where you divide the items that you need from the ones that you don’t. Donate items that you think someone else. Throw away things that you don’t need. Ask yourself when we the last time I used this item. If it’s been over a year consider getting rid of it. Divide remaining items into a frequently used and less frequently used piles.
2. Consolidate: Using the piles that you made earlier, consolidate items into containers that work with the layout of your garage. For more frequently used items, consider using see through bins that can help you easily identify when is inside. Overhead storage is a great solution for these items.
3. Organize: Place items close to where you’re most likely to use them. Consider how frequently you use an item. If used often, place where easily accessible. Less frequently used items, like holiday decor, should be stored higher up and out of the way.
4. Maintain: Now that the problem is contained, the problem that now faces you is keeping the garage clean and organized. Make sure that you have storage systems that are easy to use work well with your hobbies. Garage organization can be achieved when taken one day at a time.
