You are going to love the tutorial for this Life Size Ruler! But first, let me tell me you a bit about my darling son…
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you might know my my sweet boy suffered from a lot of food allergies as an infant. Luckily, at 17 months old he has grown out of most of his allergies except for dairy, bananas, mangoes and randomly, avocados.
When Cian was two months old, our pediatrician referred us to a wonderful pediatric gastroentrologist. One of the first steps the GI had us take was for the both of us to start taking a probiotic – me, because I was nursing, and Cian to help regulate the bacteria in his gut and help control his eczema due to his dairy intolerance. For other kids, probiotics have been shown to help colic and IBS symptoms.
As Cian has grown (can you believe he’s almost a year-and-a-half!?), the use of a probiotic has become part of our daily routine. A part that I would encourage any mother to adopt, allergies or not.
One of my favorite brands, Little Remedies® (who have the BEST gas drops that we used when Cian was a newborn – AND their products contain no artificial flavors, artificial dyes or parabens) now offer a new product Little Remedies® Probiotic Plus Electrolytes.
At only 5’1″ myself, I’m amazed that my little man is in the 98th percentile for height. Clearly he got his daddy’s genes, there! Recently, I decided to make a Life Size Ruler as a growth chart to hang up in his bedroom to measure all those height milestones.
It was quick and easy to make and only cost $25!
What You’ll Need To Make This Life Size Ruler:
- Vinyl Ruler Decals (I used these)
- A 6ft 1 x 12 board (I got mine at my local home improvement store precut to 6ft but if they only have 8ft they will cut it to size for free)
- Paint or Stain (I used a mixture of Minwax Dark Walnut & Classic Gray – the same technique as here)
- Measuring tape
Stain or paint your board. If you stain it, you’ll need to wait 48 hours before applying tick marks and numbers. Paint only needs 24 hours to fully dry.
I also like to sand the edges of my board to give a more finished look as well as to round the top and bottom edges.
The ruler is designed to hang 8 inches off the floor, so you will want to mark the first spot for your tick mark 4 from the bottom of your board. This means the first measurement will be 1 foot. Using a pencil, light mark the board.
After your first mark, add another light mark to your board every 12 inches. The 6 marks you made will account for every foot, for a total of 6 feet.
Now, all you have to do is attach the decals. The ones I purchased were cut into strips so all you had to do was align them to the pencil marks, smooth them down and pull back the transfer paper.
All in all, applying the vinyl tick marks took 10 minutes.
Once all the tick marks are applied, the last step is to place the numbers on. You can orient them vertically or horizontally, whatever’s your preference!
In order to hang it up in Cian’s room, I attached a sawtooth hanger to the back.
Isn’t Cian’s new Life Size Ruler adorable? A healthy baby is one that will grow big and tall so we’ve got to keep measuring those milestones!
