In this simple tutorial I will show you how to make a tassel – the quick and easy way! Then I’m going to attach the tassels to a canvas bag to make a cute and fashionable Tassel Tote Bag.
Hi everyone! I’ve been meaning to share this fun tutorial with you for a while but with all the house projects going on, I’m only getting around to it now.
I’m sure you’ve seen how HUGE tassels are in the fashion world right now. You can find them on bags, clothes and even jewelry. I first learned how to make a tassel when I was 7 years old. I made them in art class – along with pom poms – and I remember thinking how amazingly simply and fun they were!
I whipped all these tassels out within an hour (a good naptime craft!) and quickly stitched them to the bottom of a canvas tote. Don’t you love the jewel tones I picked? Super fun!
What You’ll Need:
- Embroidery Thread. 1 skein per tassel (I bought these in bulk for cheap!)
- Canvas Tote
- Needle and thread

How to Make A Tassel Instructions:
Place your skein of thread over a pencil.
Unravel two length of the thread and wrap it under the thread, leaving a long tail.
Pulling taught on the thread against the pencil, wrap the “tail” around the tassel to create a neck:
Run a scissors through the bottom loops and cut:
Using one of the cut threads, tie a double knot with the “tail” to secure the neck of the tassel:
Cut the ends of the tassel to give a cleaner, more uniform appearance.
Optional: run a pin or scissors through the threads to give the tassel more volume.
Once you have made however many tassels you want, just can stitch or hot glue them to the bottom of a canvas tote bag. Isn’t it so cute?
