Baby Cian is almost 10 months! YIKES! Where has the time gone!?! The little rascal has 4 teeth, is pulling himself up to standing and is crawling around like a maniac.
While packing up Cian’s nursery (sob) during our Big Move, I started to think about anything that we could chuck in the trash or things that we definitely need to keep for future baby #2 . A lot of you found the info I provided about our nursery glider helpful, so I thought giving you an update on what I consider to be the best baby products (and what I should have registered for!) might be helpful, too!
Let’s start with the aforementioned glider. Now, I assumed I would be spending A LOT of time in this chair but I really haven’t! While I was breastfeeding, I would usually nurse on the couch or in my bed. In fact, we didn’t use the nursery a whole lot until Cian moved out of our bedroom at 6 months. Since then, I’ve used the glider every night putting him to bed for a routine that only takes about 15 minutes. Saying that, I could easily have bought a regular arm chair and it would work for the same purpose. I do love the glider, though ;-)
Needless to say, I’m THRILLED that I did not shell out big bucks for the Pottery Barn rocker that I had originally envisioned. Gosh, what a waste of money THAT would have been. Plus, I really like the chair we got in the end. It’s a neutral color, it was easy to assemble (I did it myself at 8 months pregnant!), and it’s very comfortable. Also, the metal bits underneath are not at all visible, even though the picture makes it seem like they are. Oh, and it was only $298 as opposed to the $1000 PB one I had originally eyed.
The crib we bought is great. We still love everything about it. It’s beautiful and modern and looks wonderful in Cian’s nursery. A caveat if you are considering purchasing it though – you cannot attach a mobile as it has a much thicker top rail.
We also love the Organic Mattress that we purchased. There was no off-gassing and it’s super comfortable while still being firm. It’s great quality and is holding up very well. If you are considering NOT purchasing an organic mattress (they definitely are more expensive, but worth it in my opinion) then at least invest in an organic mattress protector.
Prior to Cian sleeping in his crib he slept in our bedroom in this Arm’s Reach bassinet which folds up just like a pack and play. It didn’t take up much space in our bedroom and from the first night he was home, he slept like a dream in it. I would highly recommend it!
Now, I’m not a crunchy hippie type. I am, however, very conscious of the products that I use on my child and what I feed him. I am also a notorious cheap skate and after learning how much diapers would cost over the course of several years, I decided that cloth diapers were the way to go. I did a TON of research prior to purchasing them and I know I made the right decision. I bought these ones from Amazon and I’m glad to say, 10 months later, that we are still using them. Cian has worn the same diapers since he was a few weeks old and we’ve just adjusted the snaps to accommodate his growing booty. Once we started him on solid foods we did need to buy a diaper sprayer to help get those poops off and into the toilet but that’s the only extra thing we’ve purchased. We DO however now use disposables at night. At around 6 months we made the switch when he started sleeping 12 hours straight. The cloth diapers hold up GREAT for about 5 hours…even up to 8 hours at night but for us, they weren’t cutting it for 12 hours.
Another bonus of cloth diapers is NO DIAPER RASH! Like NONE. EVER! If for some reason your baby has an extra sensitive botty and does still get a bit rashy, this ointment is amazing. It smells devine, is all-natural and won’t clog up your cloth diapers. I used it on Cian as a preventative measure before realizing there was nothing to prevent!
Back to the diapers. I purchased three of the mixed-6-packs (so 18 diapers in total) and we’ve never needed more. I think 18 is the magic number as it allows me to wash them every second day, which is totally do-able.
Also, as an FYI, my husband and mom were TOTALLY grossed out by the thought of cloth diapers but they both came around very quickly when they saw how they are no different to disposables – except that they are way cuter and chemical free, of course.
Water wipes. Hands down. No contest. 99.9% water and they are soft and do the job without any weird chemicals. You can use them to wipe down dirty faces and hands without worrying about what’s on them.
Out of all the books Cian has received as gifts, the Baby Touch and Feel books win every time. He’s obsessed with how they feel and gets all silly and giggly. There’s a whole range of them and they make for great gifts.
If I had to narrow down Cians’s 5 favorite toys they would be as follows:
Fisher-Price Rainforest Melodies and Lights Deluxe Gym: Cian got a solid 8 months out of this. Even now, we’ve taken off the hanging toys and he loves to play with them. This was perfect from when he was a few days old right up until right before he started crawling. While not able to sit UNDER the arch at 7/8 months, he would sit at the edge and play with the hanging toys.
Fisher-Price Luv U Zoo Jumperoo: We purchased this at about 6 months and Cian still loves it. He’s getting a bit big for it now and because we live in an apartment we don’t use it much anymore because his jumping is probably very loud to the people below us! I highly recommend it though, he still absolutely adores it.
My Brest Friend Original Nursing Pillow, Fireworks This thing went everywhere with me. The cover is easily removable, it ties aroud your waist is and comfy for baby. Cian lay on this thing until he was 6 months old. It was literally my “breast” friend for the longest time! lol
At 6 months I started weaning Cian onto a bottle. Prior to that he was exclusively breastfed, no pumping at all. These Tommee Tippee bottles made the process SO EASY because their extra wide nipples are designed to be the closest thing to a real nipple. I also purchased the ones that are anti-colic just as an extra precaution because Cian was quite gassy as a newborn. These bottles are still holding up great and we’ve just had to switch out the nipples to faster flowing ones as he has gotten older. I just throw them in this dishwasher on the sanitize cycle and they are good to go (which saves the need for any other extra drying or cleaning things you might need)
We registered for the Fisher Price Space Saver High Chair instead of a traditional freestanding one and we don’t regret it one bit. We bring this one everywhere with us, so it’s super handy! It just straps underneath and around any chair. It’s reclinable and the cover is machine washable.
Car Seat & Strollers
We purchased this Chicco infant car seat and we still love it. It’s incredibly easy to install and best of all, you can buy an adapter so that it snaps right into the Bob stroller, which we also own and ADORE. The adapter is important because obviously a small infant or newborn cannot sit up in a regular stroller. Most people either buy an infant stroller or just a frame for the car seat to snap into. I wanted to own as little equipment as possible, so the adapter meant that we could use our Bob immediately, instead of having to wait until Cian was 4 months.
Now, do you need a $360 stroller? If you are planning on running or walking on trails, then yes. If you only ever walk around the mall, then no! Think about your lifestyle and what you ACTUALLY need.
For trips to the mall and such we have a much smaller, lightweight stroller. It’s nothing crazy but it does the job!
Shopping Cart/High Chair Cover
Probably my favorite item – and one that I didn’t even register for – is Cian’s Shopping Cart Cover. I did a TON of research before purchasing this one. I still get stopped by someone at least once a week asking me where I got it because it’s so awesome. It’s got padded sides so even when Cian was 4 months old he could sit up in the cart and fit snuggly. It also doubles as a high chair cover for when we dine out. This is by far one of my favorite purchases and gets A LOT of use.
If I could only choose 4 items for you to purchase. These would be them. Funnily enough, not a single one of them was on my registry. I found each one of them out of a specific need when Cian was a few weeks old.
I’m going to start with my absolute favorite baby purchase of all time. ever.
Picture this. Newborn baby comes home. You hold him and snuggle him. He’s falls asleep on your chest. You’re stuck holding him for a couple of hours. And if your baby is big this will get tiresome pretty quickly! You can try put them in a swing but most newborns are too small (even my ten-pound baby didn’t fit comfortably – he hated it at first). If you have a pack and play you can put the baby in the little baby seat. I wanted my son NEXT to me but not ON me. In steps this wonderful invention. Place it on the couch next to you. Baby can nap in it, play in it and just generally lounge. We used this thing for FIVE MONTHS until Cian could sit up unassisted. He LOVED it. I loved it. It was a life saver!! He would happily sit in it and play with his toys and while he was a newborn would take loooong naps in it.
My one suggestion for every new parent is to purchase this baby lounger. You won’t regret it!
My second favorite purchase is the Puj Tub (no idea how it’s pronounced but I call it the “pudge tub”) It’s basically a collapsible baby bathtub. It’s soft and conforms to your sink. This means no bending over a bathtub and struggling with a newborn. Again, we used this until Cian could no longer fit in it (about 5 months). This is another MUST for any new parent and is so much easier than the infant bathtub we registered for. Bonus: you can also easily travel with it! Thank me later ;-)
Baby Sound Machine.
I didn’t register for this but had always planned on getting one. The one I purchased was cheap and portable. White noise will soothe your baby to sleep as it’s a familiar sound (it’s like what they can hear inutero). Bringing the sound machine when you travel will also help your baby to sleep as it is again a familiar sound. Cian will sleep ANYWHERE and I’m convinced it’s because he always has his white noise playing!
Finally, every doctor will tell you to purchase a humidifier for baby. This is especially important if you have a winter baby as the heating will probably be on in the house all night and the air will get dry. They are also great when anyone in the family has a cold or cough. In fact, this winter was the first time in years that I didn’t get a sinus infection and I attribute that to this humidifier. I purchased this one because of its large capacity as well as its UV light that kills 99.9% of bacteria, mold & spores in water. The one I originally registered for couldn’t do that and I didn’t want to have to keep buying distilled water for it.
PHEW! I know that was a suuuper long post but I hope you will find something helpful in there. If you have questions about any of the products or specifically about cloth diapering, please let me know – I’d love to help!
On a final note…if you had to pick 4 essential items for a baby registry what would they be? What could you not have lived without?
